7 Questions
When did you become interested in photography?
About six years ago i was faced with a dilemma. I owned a few adult websites and had been shooting video for them myself. My partner on these sites was responsible for the still photography and abruptly left. I decided to learn still photography and take over their responsibilities. Looking back though, i picked up a still camera to take erotic photos of my first girlfriend around the age of 17. So i guess its always been an interest of mine. Im one of those people thats probably too dumb to realize something is impossible, so i march forward, tackle the obstacle and before you know it, im not all that bad at it.
Do you have your own studio or are you working on location
I've had a couple lofts in downtown LA, only a block or so from Skid Row. Those were amazing spaces to create in, giant open floor plans and access to loads of discarded items throughout the city i ended up dragging home in the early morning hours. Currently i live and shoot in my home located in the San Fernando Valley. This space has a lot of character, all the walls are painted unusual colors. For a couple years i shot at night in my backyard too, in sets i built out of items i found in dumpsters. At one point i built two faux rooms out of nothing but furniture pallets and drywall, all of which i found laying on the side of the road. I'd make these elaborate sets using whatever materials i could find scouring the city's dumpsters the night before. As things have progressed for me, i built a full sized room in my backyard thats sheltered from the elements. It can house 4 faux rooms, i tear them down every few months and rebuild new ones. It wasn't until last year that i began shooting in natural light. So the world of shooting outdoors is a new challenge i've tackled and i'm pleased to say that im happy with the results. My first shoot involving nothing but natural light was published in a Russian art magazine.
Do you have assistance or are you working alone?
For the most part i work alone. Ive had people help me with makeup, dumpster diving, set building, photo editing, etc. But in the end, i prefer to do everything myself. You'll never get another soul on earth that has as much interest in what you do, as yourself. So you can't expect people to stick around for very long.
Was It easy to find models when you started photographing nude?
It was. I sent out some emails the first few months i was shooting. None of the models i shot video of were willing to be my guinea pig with stills, but within 4-5 shoots, after displaying the results online, they all approached me for my stills work and it snowballed from there. At one point, there were so many girls, i couldve been shooting every day of my life for several years. For awhile i tried to accommodate as many people as possible. Its only in the last year that ive become much more selective.
What do you prefer: digital or analog?
Ive never shot anything but digital. So i have no frame of reference. I like the way film looks better, but i dont have the patience and im too much of a miser to burn through film trying to learn. Im completely self taught, so i need to see results quickly and move forward so that i may improve. If i used film, I'd be stuck in a darkroom or arguing with my local film processor.
Do you have other artist(s) who you admire and inspire you?
I've been inspired mostly by the cinema of Kubrick, Lynch and Hitchcock. Truth be told, i'd rather be shooting erotic films than stills. I want my work to be as cinematic as possible, telling a story, having rhythm. Im heavily inspired by the Deftones, Patsy Cline, Tricky, PJ Harvey and Roy Orbison. There were months in which i wouldn't speak one word to the models i shot, i had an assistant arrange the shoots, they would come over and i'd have music blasting in the background so you couldnt hear yourself think. When i shoot i tend to go into this weird space where my mind is completely clear and i allow whatever is out there to pass through me and direct me. So self doubt, the rules of photography and all that other noise is gone, im only left with how i feel at the moment ... and that feeling is usually passion. I dont watch TV, read magazines, surf the net for anything other than to update my sites and check my email. Im not all that tuned in with pop culture. So there are no still photographers that i admire or seek to emulate. Im not even that big a fan of still photography as a whole. I think cinema and music are far superior delivery methods for feelings and emotion.
What is number one on you wishlist?
With regards to photography, ive been acquiring loads of new camera gear. When i first started i was extremely bare bones. For the first three years, i only used lights you'd find at your local hardware store. I shot several magazine spreads with just those hot lights. My camera is a fixed lens that goes for about $350. It wasn't until this last year that i felt confident in buying gear. Im not a techy person, and i didn't want a piece of equipment to intimidate me. So i used the simplest of lights and cameras. I felt that i should learn to make something from nothing under the hardest circumstances. Now that ive passed my own self inflicted photo boot camp, im ready to get some real gear. So a DSLR is first on my wishlist, followed closely by funding for my first erotic film.
